Downtown apartments accepting applications for September move-in

ASHEVILLE – Asheville’s first multifamily apartment complex built downtown since 1982 is now accepting applications.

Residents may begin moving in next month. The leasing office will open by the end of this month.

Executives of the Kassinger Development Group based in Charleston, South Carolina, made the announcement on Tuesday.

KDG is developing the 180-unit Retreat at Hunt Hill apartments.

The more than $20 million development will use Energy Star design and construction and will be at 32 Ardmion Park, above McCormick Field and across from Mission Hospital. That is the site of the former McCormick Heights apartments, a troubled complex with high crime that the city had torn down eight years ago.

Personnel of Pegasus Residential, a Georgia-based property management company, is accepting resident applications for The Retreat at Hunt Hill at Weirbridge Village, a KDG property at 1 Legacy Oaks Place in Asheville.

Pulliam Properties of Asheville and Richardson Properties of Greensboro are partners in the venture.

The apartment complex grounds will feature natural paths of wooded areas and Beaucatcher Overlook Park, according to the statement.

Ten percent of the apartments, or 18 units, will be workforce housing, for which renters must qualify, said Tyler Kassinger, KDG's development manager, in a Tuesday night phone interview.

Those units will include efficiency apartments for $600 a month. Kassinger said those who qualify, may choose any type of apartment, in accordance with federal fair housing laws.

The rest of the units will be market rate. They will range from $815 to $1,400 a month, depending on the sizes of the apartments, Kassinger said. The largest apartments will have two bedrooms.

The development also will include a clubhouse, which will boast a pool and a fitness room, and that facility will be on some of the highest ground.

Units will offer granite countertops, walk-in closets, washer and dryer connections, ceiling fans and oversized patios. Most also will have screened porches.
